2Bookaholiday Recommends – Mitsis Galini – Local Highlights

Athens – With equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens is a heady mix of history and edginess. Cultural and social life plays out amid, around and in ancient landmarks. The magnificent Acropolis, visible from almost every part of the city, reminds Greeks daily of their heritage and the city’s many transformations. There is crackling energy in galleries, political debates and even on the walls of derelict buildings. This creates a lively urban bustle, but at the end of the day, Athenians build their own villages in the city, especially in open-air restaurants and bars where they linger for hours.

Delphi – One of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece, Delphi is located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece. Delphi Greece was the most important oracle in the ancient Greek world and pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean would come to ask for the prophecy of god Apollo. The prophecy was spoken by the god through the words of Pythia, the high-priestess of his temple. As the myth says and scientists have confirmed, Delphi is the naval of the Earth, meaning the central point of our planet. Along time, it became also the base of a political and military association, apart from a religious sanctuary.

Meteora Monasteries – Serene, spiritual, magical, mystical, extraordinary, breathtaking, immense, inspiring, impressive. These are only some of the words people very often use in an effort to describe the Meteora phenomenon. A trip to Meteora offers the unique experience of nature’s grandeur in conjunction with history, architecture and man’s everlasting desire to connect with the Divine. From the early Christian times, the Meteora vertical cliffs were regarded as the perfect place to achieve absolute isolation, to discover peace and harmony and, thus, to support man’s eternal struggle for spiritual elevation.

Thermopylae – Made famous by the film ‘300’, The Battle of Thermopylae was fought here. Led by King Leonidas of Sparta against The Persian Empire of Xerxes over the course of three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It is true, there were only 300 Spartan soldiers at the Battle of Thermopylae and ‘The Pass’ at Thermopylae was opened to the Persian army, according to Herodotus, at the cost to the Persians of up to 20,000 fatalities.

Kamena Vourla Thermal Hot Springs – The thermal city of Kamena Vourla, is built on the northwest shore of Maliakos bay, is a rare fascinating sight. The sea on the one hand and the green, full of perennial trees, Thronio and Kallindromo Mountains on the other, compose this special environment. The dry climate, the operation of the thermalistic facilities throughout the year, the supportive service facilities and the serene and alternating environment make the staying pleasant. Kamena Vourla thermal springs are classified by specialists as the most important in Greece and generally in Europe.
